Today's Thought

Anne Morrow Lindbergh is quoted as saying this: "I do not believe that sheer suffering teaches. If suffering alone taught, all the world would be wise." How profound are those words? Think of all the suffering going on in the world today. Are we wise and learning anything from it? I don't think so. So much is going on right now. The warring among different people. All the unemployment. Families being torn apart by what is going on and are we any the wiser? No. I hope to see things change. I know my parents and grandparents went though good times and bad times and lived to see better times. My life growing up was good. I lived in a pleasant time of our country's growth. Then came Viet Nam a bad time. The "flower child" time, the "hippy" time, the " birth control pill" time when our morals started going south! Remember when teaching in school required memorization for times tables and reading classics and phonics and dressing that did not include pants or shorts for girls or boys wearing shirts with nasty sayings and pants showing underwear? Do we have to go through all this sort of thing to see how far we can fall to finally get back to basics and our faith in a higher power and caring about others? I think so. I think progress is progress and we can't stop it. But....is it good? Does suffering teach? Why do we have to keep suffering? When do we learn?

  1. I don't know if people will ever learn. People are just too liberal and to easy going. Anything goes. The world went south in a hand basket when women started to go out to work, instead of staying home and raising their children like they should. People want, want, want to much in today's world. People are wrapped up in things.

  2. Lo, your question in how far do we have to fall to finally get back to our faith reminds me of a book I am reading right now, Secrets of the Vine, Breaking Through to Abundance by Bruce Wildinson. This book helps you to understand what God has in mind for you when you suffer, either from illness or anything that you may have done to cause the suffering yourself, bad decisions, not listening to his call, whatever. It is really awesomely inspiring and it has led to some solid answers for me.
