I read an article in the newspaper this weekend about the new pictures that are going to be put on cigarette packages. Now..and I want this made perfectly clear....I do not smoke and never have. I have lived with parents that smoked and a husband that smoked though. From that experienced point of view I can tell you that a true smoker will not be affected by a picture on a pack of cigs! The addiction is much to strong in someone that is a dedicated smoker. As quoted in the article by Charita Goshay in the Canton Repository.. We eat as if every night is The Last Supper. We're still tanning, sexting, driving drunk and engaging in unprotected sex. We bungee jump ride the highest roller coasters we can find, go to NASCAR to see the wrecks. We love crazy-killer cop shows and blood-gushing video games. Even our kids' cartoons have body counts. Next weekend we'll light firecrackers big enough to take down a Huey helicopter. Even looking at yearly articles and TV news about people who now have nubs instead of fingers will not stop us! So, her views and mine are this.....it won't stop a true smoker. I am more than happy to say that my hubby gave up smoking after many many many years just over a year ago now. It was not easy. It was not because of seeing a black lung picture or someone walking around with an oxygen tank strapped to them. Money might have had an affect and my health might have helped. The one grandson running through the garage holding his nose might also have helped plus the comments about smell from all the non smoking members of the family. BUT....the real reason was it was his decision that it was time and going outside in bitter cold weather to puff was not fun anymore. Retirement helped too in my opinion. Not being around "the guys" smoking made it easier. In conclusion to todays' blog I just want to say....in this case a picture will not do the trick.

I don't think it will either.
ReplyDeletePeople are addicted to them and they really like them so, nothing will stop them except themselves wanting to.
Same with anything I suspect. Remember the old saying you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink? sort of sounds right to me.
Have a great week Lois.
I whole hardheartedly agree with you. No picture is going to help anyone stop smoking. I'm glad to hear Lynn stopped smoking though. Good for him, and good for you. I bet your sure glad after all these years. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteGeesh, if doctors, nurses, and surgeons smoke and they see the REALITY from the patients they deal with, and yet they are still stupid enough to keep smoking - there's no way a little red circle w/a slash is going to change things. lol
ReplyDeleteI smoked for over 30 years. A doctor once simply asked me, "Why?"
ReplyDeleteA lengthy mental list of reasons popped up, but pondering this question for about a year I had to scratch through each item on that list. My final conclusion was that the only reason I smoked was that I could not stop. Knowing this I was able to finally take charge and kick the addiction. It was a full year before cigarettes weren't a constant on my mind. But, I can say that August 6th will be 22 years free of the nasty things! :)
